Sold the van

Wow the last post here was from December. A lot has happened since then :)

First, I sold the van. Here are a few observations about van life that I didn’t totally expect:

Solo van life can be very lonely compared to other forms of travel. When I stay in hostels or hotels I at least see people and interact and ride transportation with other humans. In a van solo it can become just me and the road. The perfect setup would be to have someone to travel with, but that’s not me at the moment. Someday maybe.

Having a van in the city can be a pain in the ass. I’m used to small town life with the luxury of a driveway and plentiful street parking. Having a van and not having a driveway or anywhere guaranteed to park it can be a hassle. Not a big deal, but I ended up parking the van at my dad’s house because his street has lots of parking and it felt like an imposition. I know that’s not super rational, but there you have it.

The cost of a van would pay for a hell of a lot of Airbnbs, flights, etc. I was looking at listings for built vans and people are getting great money for them. In the end, the money was more attractive than the van. I sold it to a super nice woman from Lake Tahoe that flew out for it. I made several grand on it when you count the cost of the van and the cost of the conversion, so that’s pretty great. Now my adventure fund is fat and the world is beckoning.
